Road closures are set to take place in Cardiff this weekend due to the Wales vs. Fiji Autumn International match. The fixture is the first in a series of three matches to be held in the capital this month. The game will kick off at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, October 10, at 1.40 pm. To ensure the safety of fans and visitors, Cardiff Council has announced a comprehensive program of road closures across the city and provided travel advice for attendees.
With the gates opening two hours before the match begins, spectators are advised to plan their journey in advance and arrive early. As the M4 is expected to be busy with attendees driving to and from the game, Cardiff residents are encouraged to utilize the park & ride facility at the former Toy’s R Us site car park in the Sports Village in Cardiff Bay to avoid congestion in the city centre.
A full city centre road closure will be in effect from 9.30 am until 5.40 pm on the day of the match. This closure will impact several key roads, including Kingsway, Cowbridge Road East, Tudor Street, Plantagenet Street, and Beauchamp Street. Additionally, Duke Street, Castle St, High Street, St Mary Street, Caroline Street, Wood Street, Central Square, Westgate Street, Quay Street, Guildhall Place, Golate, Park Street, Havelock Street, and Scott Road will be completely closed off.
To facilitate reliable access for buses, Station Terrace and Guildford Street will be restricted to buses only. Scott Road and Park Street will be closed from 7 am to prepare Gate 5 and manage queuing fans. Furthermore, Penarth Road will be closed 30 minutes before and up to an hour after the match to assist train passengers at the nearby train station. Access to the Civic Centre will be regulated throughout the day, with limited parking available for event attendees and commuters.
In terms of transportation, there will be a reduced number of train services operating on Sunday, which are expected to be busier than usual. Transport for Wales (TfW) has stated that additional capacity will be provided on routes to and from Cardiff to accommodate the influx of passengers. Post-event queues for mainline rail services will form in Central Square, while queues for Valleys services will be located behind the station. Cardiff Queen Street will close at 3 pm, except for accessible access and passengers travelling to Cardiff Bay.
Event parking will be limited until around 12 pm on Sunday due to the National Service of Remembrance for Wales taking place at the Wales National War Memorial in Alexandra Gardens. During this time, parking will only be allowed at specific designated areas. These road closures and traffic management measures aim to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of all attendees during the Wales vs. Fiji Autumn International match in Cardiff this weekend.
