Center Parcs, the popular holiday company, has unveiled plans to establish its seventh holiday village in the UK and Ireland. The proposed site for this new venture is located in the Scottish Borders, three miles north of Hawick and 55 miles south of Edinburgh. While the project is still in its early stages, Center Parcs aims to submit a planning application in 2025 for approximately 700 lodges.
The new village is set to mirror the successful concept of the existing six holiday villages in England and Ireland. It will feature a range of amenities including indoor and outdoor activities, shops, bars, restaurants, an Aqua Sana Forest Spa, and the famous Subtropical Swimming Paradise. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Center Parcs plans to embark on afforestation efforts to enhance biodiversity on the site.
Colin McKinlay, the CEO of Center Parcs, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting the potential to elevate leisure and tourism in the Scottish Borders. He emphasised the economic benefits that a Center Parcs village typically brings to local communities and the positive impact on the regional and national economy.
During the construction phase, the project is expected to create 750-800 jobs, with a focus on employing local contractors where possible. Once operational, the new village anticipates generating around 1,200 permanent non-seasonal jobs, providing significant career opportunities, including management positions, within the local area.
The investment for this ambitious development is estimated to be between £350m-£400m. The site, situated on land owned by the Buccleuch Group, covers approximately 1,000 acres with plans for development on 400 acres. Benny Higgins, the Executive Chairman of the Buccleuch Group, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Center Parcs, noting the positive impact it is expected to have on tourism and leisure in the region.
The proposed Center Parcs village in the Scottish Borders aims to offer families a closer-to-home holiday destination, catering to the robust demand for such experiences. The company’s focus on sustainability and biodiversity enhancement aligns with its values and commitment to creating a positive environmental impact.
As the project progresses, Center Parcs will engage in thorough planning processes, site surveys, and community consultations to ensure a well-rounded and sustainable development approach. With its track record of successful holiday villages in the UK and Ireland, Center Parcs aims to bring its unique blend of leisure, entertainment, and nature to the picturesque Scottish Borders.
