Barry to Receive £20m for Transformative Improvements After Months of Waiting

After months of anticipation, Barry is set to receive £20m in funding for transformative improvements. The UK Government had put the decision-making process on hold for the funding scheme, causing concerns about the status of the promised funds for the town. However, in a recent budget announcement, it was confirmed that Barry would indeed benefit from the £20m allocation.

The funding is part of a long-term plan under the Towns Fund, aimed at revitalising high streets, addressing anti-social behaviour, and enhancing connectivity in Barry. The funds will be managed by a partnership consisting of various stakeholders, overseen by the Vale of Glamorgan Council. David Stevens, the leader of The Barry Partnership, expressed excitement about the potential to make a real difference in the town by investing in its people and places.

Community leaders had previously voiced worries over the suspension of funding decisions for Barry and other towns across the UK. Cllr Ian Johnson from the Plaid Cymru group at Vale of Glamorgan Council described the delay as “unforgivable.” Following the confirmation of the funding for Barry, Cllr Johnson emphasised the importance of promptly utilising the money to enhance the town centre, attract more shoppers, and combat anti-social behaviour.

The news of Barry’s funding allocation, alongside 75 other towns, was welcomed by Cllr Lis Burnett, the leader of Vale of Glamorgan Council. She highlighted the opportunity this funding presents to tackle longstanding challenges and collaborate with residents, businesses, and partners to create a future that Barry’s people can take pride in. Plans for a revised prospectus outlining updated timelines and objectives for Barry’s programme under the Towns Fund are expected to be published soon.

Rob Thomas, the council’s chief executive, lauded the confirmation of the funding as a chance to invest in Barry’s communities for the benefit of all residents, aligning with the ambitious vision outlined in the new Corporate Plan for the Vale of Glamorgan. The focus now shifts to implementing initiatives that will drive positive change and unlock new potential in Barry.

With the financial support secured, Barry is poised to embark on a transformative journey that promises to revitalise the town and address key issues affecting its residents and businesses. The influx of funds represents a significant opportunity to foster growth, development, and community well-being in Barry, setting the stage for a brighter and more prosperous future.
