Drivers are risking safety on the roads by avoiding MOTs and using faulty tyres in a bid to save money, a recent survey suggests.
The survey, conducted by the RAC and polling 2,691 UK drivers, revealed that a significant 10% of motorists of all ages have engaged in at least one of these risky behaviours. Shockingly, a fifth (20%) of drivers under the age of 44 admitted to breaking the law by either using faulty tyres or skipping their MOTs.
MOTs play a crucial role in ensuring road safety by checking various vehicle components such as lights, seatbelts, tyres, and brakes to ensure they meet legal standards. In the UK, cars typically undergo their first MOT after three years on the road and then annually until they are 40 years old. The cost of an MOT for a car is capped at £54.85, excluding any necessary repair expenses.
Maintaining roadworthy tyres is fundamental for safe driving, with specific legal requirements related to factors such as tread depth and overall condition. However, nearly one in five (19%) drivers admitted cutting corners on necessary repairs or servicing to save money.
The RAC has raised concerns about the potential consequences of such actions, warning that delaying essential vehicle maintenance could result in more breakdowns and potentially lead to increased repair costs in the future. Simon Williams, a spokesperson for RAC breakdown, emphasised the importance of adhering to MOT requirements and ensuring tyres are in good condition for the safety of all road users.
Drivers who neglect MOTs risk a fine of up to £1,000, while those found with illegal tyres may face fines from the police, with severe cases potentially leading to court action. The survey, conducted by Online95, spanned from March 23 to April 15, urging drivers to prioritise road safety over short-term cost savings.
In conclusion, prioritising road safety by adhering to MOT requirements and ensuring well-maintained tyres is crucial for all drivers. By neglecting these essential aspects of vehicle maintenance, drivers not only risk fines but more importantly, compromise the safety of themselves and other road users. It is imperative for drivers to uphold legal standards and invest in regular vehicle maintenance to promote road safety and prevent potential accidents.
