Boy, 8, raises enough for 300 meal deals by running a mile a day after being distressed by homeless man’s plight

An eight-year-old boy, Lewys, has shown incredible compassion and determination by undertaking a unique challenge to help the homeless in Swansea. Lewys was deeply moved when he encountered a homeless man with a dog during a shopping trip with his family. Witnessing the man’s struggle tugged at his heartstrings, leading him to plead with his parents to buy the man some food and a drink. But Lewys didn’t stop there – he wanted to do more to assist those less fortunate.

Inspired to make a difference, Lewys came up with a creative plan to raise funds for the homeless. He decided to run a mile every day for 26 days to collect money for those in need. Initially aiming to purchase ten meal deals, Lewys’ fundraising efforts surpassed all expectations. With the help of his mother, Rhian Atwood, a JustGiving page was set up, and within just three days, over £1,000 was raised – enough to buy nearly 300 Tesco Meal deals.

Lewys, who is no stranger to physical activities like rugby and football, approached the challenge with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose. His mother, Rhian Atwood, expressed immense pride in her son’s initiative, highlighting how the experience has not only touched Lewys but also led to a deeper understanding of social issues like homelessness. As Lewys spreads awareness among his peers, more children have joined him in his daily runs, showing solidarity in his noble cause.

Rhian Atwood commended the overwhelming support from the community towards Lewys’ fundraising campaign, with local sports clubs expressing interest in participating. Each day sees more individuals eager to contribute to the cause, reflecting the growing impact of Lewys’ efforts. By using his daily runs as a platform to raise awareness about homelessness, an eight-year-old Lewys is sending a powerful message – that consistent, compassionate actions can create significant change in the world.

As Lewys continues his fundraising journey, the collective response from the community underscores the capacity of individuals, regardless of age, to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Through his perseverance and empathy, Lewys serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, showing that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact on those in need.
