Maternity unit at Princess of Wales Hospital to remain closed beyond original timeline
The maternity and neonatal unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend has faced an extended closure since September 2, when urgent improvement works commenced. Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board initially planned for a 12-week shutdown to facilitate essential upgrades. However, recent developments have led to a delay in the reopening of the crucial maternity services.
A critical incident was declared by Cwm Taf Morgannwg after a survey revealed significant damage to the hospital roof caused by heavy rainfall, resulting in pervasive leaks throughout the facility. As a consequence of the urgent and evolving situation at the hospital, the maternity and neonatal unit will not be operational by early December, as initially anticipated. The health board now estimates that services may resume in early 2025.
Efforts to replace the damaged roof will commence in November and will be executed in phases, with priority given to the maternity and neonatal unit. It is anticipated that all necessary repairs will be completed by summer 2025. Due to the compromised condition of the hospital roof, patients from the affected first-floor wards, including the maternity unit, have been relocated to alternative settings, displacing around 200 individuals.
While patients with acute requirements remain at the Princess of Wales Hospital, others have been either discharged, transferred to community facilities, or relocated to other hospitals within the health board. Suzanne Hardacre, the director of midwifery at the health board, acknowledged the challenges posed by the situation, emphasizing the need for ongoing maintenance efforts for patient and staff safety.
The unexpected delays in reopening the maternity and neonatal unit highlight the pressing need for infrastructure upgrades to ensure a safe and functional healthcare environment. Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB is dedicated to keeping the community informed and prioritizing the well-being of women, families, and staff members during this period of transition and restoration.
As the health board navigates through the complex process of roof replacement and facility restoration, regular updates will be provided to affected stakeholders to mitigate concerns and maintain transparency. The collaborative efforts of healthcare professionals, support staff, and community members are vital in overcoming the challenges posed by the extended closure of the maternity unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
