A new study has revealed a concerning lack of awareness among Brits when it comes to NHS winter vaccinations. Recent research shows that almost a third (32%) of individuals with underlying health conditions such as respiratory disease, diabetes, and morbid obesity (BMI of 40 and above) are unaware that they are eligible for these vaccinations.
To address this issue, the Stay on Track campaign has been launched today. Developed and funded by Moderna in collaboration with Obesity UK, the campaign aims to educate and inform people living with obesity about their increased risk of severe outcomes from respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and flu. The campaign provides essential information and top tips for staying healthy during the winter months, such as maintaining good sleep hygiene, staying active, practicing hand hygiene, and checking eligibility for winter vaccinations.
Dr Jahangir Alom BEM, an Emergency Medicine Physician in North East London, highlighted the increased risk that individuals with a BMI of 40 and above face in terms of severe illness from COVID-19 and flu. Despite this heightened risk, the research found that 55% of people living with obesity are concerned about contracting COVID-19 or flu in the upcoming months, with 40% unsure or unaware of their eligibility for vaccinations.
A survey of 3,000 adults commissioned by Moderna UK revealed that only 24% of respondents were aware that individuals with obesity are eligible for winter vaccinations, compared to almost two thirds who knew that older adults (aged 65 years and over) are eligible. Professor Paul Gately, CEO of Obesity UK, emphasised the critical need for increased awareness among both the general public and those affected by obesity regarding vaccination eligibility.
The Stay on Track campaign website, StayOnTrackThisAutumn.co.uk, offers additional resources and tools for individuals to check their BMI and eligibility for COVID-19 and flu vaccines on the NHS. Dr Philip Cruz, Country Medical Director at Moderna UK, stressed the importance of prioritising respiratory vaccines alongside fundamental health practices like proper nutrition, exercise, and rest.
As winter approaches and cases of flu, COVID-19, and other respiratory illnesses are expected to rise, raising awareness about vaccination eligibility becomes crucial. The campaign aims to fill the gap in knowledge and ensure that individuals at higher risk, such as those living with obesity, have access to necessary information and resources to protect their health during the winter months.
