Public urged to be vigilant online while abroad during half term

People planning to travel abroad during the upcoming October half term have been advised to exercise caution when connecting to unfamiliar wifi networks to safeguard their privacy and data. The warning comes from telecoms giant Virgin Media O2 following the release of new research revealing that 79% of individuals tend to join unknown networks while overseas, with nearly half (49%) being unaware of the potential security risks involved in doing so.

Joining public or unfamiliar wifi networks poses a significant security threat as these networks are often unsecured, making it easy for hackers to infiltrate and compromise a user’s device. This could lead to the theft of personal data or the installation of malware on the device. Virgin Media O2 highlighted the efficacy of its Advanced Security service, which preemptively blocked more than seven million unsafe websites and thwarted around 50,000 cyber attacks in August and during the last school holiday.

Gareth Lister, the director of connectivity at Virgin Media O2, emphasised the importance of exercising caution and avoiding joining unfamiliar wifi networks, likening the approach to the concept of ‘stranger danger’. Users were encouraged to connect to secure networks they trust, such as those in hotels, or to explore options provided by their mobile network operator, such as inclusive roaming like O2 offers in the EU at no extra cost.

Lister also advised the public to be extra vigilant when interacting online, urging them to refrain from clicking on suspicious links in emails or visiting unfamiliar websites. He cautioned against emails and links containing lookalike characters from non-Latin scripts, typos, or unfamiliar domains, suggesting that they could be potential sources of cyber threats. Additionally, Lister recommended the use of security measures like two-factor authentication to enhance device protection.

As the half term approaches, Virgin Media O2’s message serves as a timely reminder for travellers to prioritise their online security and take proactive steps to safeguard their personal information and devices. By staying alert and practising safe online habits, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with connecting to unfamiliar networks while abroad.
