‘Animalistic’ man kicked, punched, bit and spat at police then smeared excrement around cell

A man in Swansea exhibited what was described as “animalistic-type behaviour” when he lashed out at police officers, including punching, kicking, biting, and spitting at them. The courtroom heard that just weeks before the incident, the man, Kallum Nicholls, had also assaulted and racially abused police officers before spitting blood in his cell. Nicholls, aged 23, has a criminal record with 64 previous offences, including theft, burglary, wounding, criminal damage, and multiple assaults on police officers.

Nicholls’ barrister mentioned that the defendant had a troubled childhood, leading to drug misuse and a “fight or flight” response towards the police following a previous arrest where he sustained a broken arm. The court was informed that on August 14 of this year, police were called to a Poundland store in Llanelli after Nicholls was caught stealing items. During his arrest, he became violent towards the officers, kicking, spitting, and biting them. Even in custody, he continued to be aggressive, assaulting officers and causing damage to the police station.

For his actions, Nicholls pleaded guilty to theft, four counts of assaulting a police officer, and criminal damage. His lawyer stated that substance abuse influenced his behaviour on the day of the incident, and that he regretted his actions. Judge Geraint Walters expressed dismay at Nicholls’ behaviour, highlighting the public’s disapproval of such actions towards law enforcement. Despite receiving a reduced sentence for pleading guilty, Nicholls was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison, with the judge ensuring that he would serve at least half of the term in custody before being released on licence.

Dyfed-Powys Police does not release custody photographs for defendants with sentences under 12 months. This incident sheds light on the challenges faced by law enforcement officers and the consequences individuals may face for violent behaviour towards them. Nicholls’ case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting authority and the legal consequences of violent actions.
