Neath Port Talbot Council’s Chief Executive Karen Jones has received heartfelt tributes as she announces her resignation from the role earlier this year. Jones, who became the first female CEO in the council’s history when she assumed the position in 2020, has been with the council for more than two decades, serving in various roles. She is recognised for her leadership during the Covid pandemic and for her involvement in approving the major Celtic Freeport development in Port Talbot’s future.
At the council’s recent full meeting on October 16, members from all political parties expressed their appreciation for Jones’s dedication during her tenure. Council Leader Steve Hunt praised her service, acknowledging her unwavering commitment to the communities in Neath Port Talbot. Hunt stated, “You leave with our best wishes and deepest appreciation.” Councillor Wayne Carpenter also extended well wishes to Jones, foreseeing a continuation of her remarkable contributions beyond retirement.
In her farewell address at the meeting, Jones thanked the council members for their support and camaraderie. She expressed confidence in the council’s future under her successor, Frances O’Brien, who will assume the role following Jones’s departure in November. O’Brien, previously the chief officer for communities and place at Monmouthshire County Council, will step into the chief executive position.
Following her time at Neath Port Talbot Council, Jones will transition to a new role with The Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru. The council will bid farewell to Jones in November as she embarks on this new chapter, leaving behind a legacy of impactful leadership. The council looks forward to embracing O’Brien’s leadership as the incoming chief executive.
