A transport hub in Porth, valued at £6.6 million, is causing frustration among residents as it remains unopened despite construction being completed almost a year ago. The hub was initially planned to be finished by spring 2023, but there is still no definitive opening date announced. Econ Construction Ltd, the contractor responsible for the site, has confirmed the completion of work, but the delay in opening is attributed to the ownership being transferred to Transport for Wales (TfW).
Funded by the Welsh Government, Cardiff City Region City Deal, and £3.5 million from the Levelling Up Fund, the project aims to enhance connectivity between bus and rail services, improve the overall traveller experience, and reduce journey times. Located adjacent to the existing railway station, the hub features amenities such as electric vehicle charging points, a taxi rank, and cycle stores.
Local Member of the Senedd, Buffy Williams, raised concerns about the prolonged closure of the hub during a session at the Senedd. She highlighted the challenges faced by residents due to ongoing transformation work on the Treherbert line. The lack of step-free access at the station has been a significant issue raised by residents, impacting individuals with mobility challenges and families with prams.
Residents have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the delay in the hub’s opening. One resident remarked about the significant investment into building the hub, which remains unused. Local Councillor Ros Davis echoed the community’s frustration and urged for the hub’s swift opening to benefit the town and its residents.
Transport for Wales assured that they are collaboratively working with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to finalize the remaining tasks for the interchange building to prepare for its public opening. Once completed, the interchange will be handed over to TfW, and an official opening date will be shared with the community. Despite the delays, both the council and TfW are eager to see the hub operational to enhance travel in the Rhondda region and revitalise the town centre.
As residents await further updates on the opening date, the anticipation and frustrations surrounding the delayed inauguration of the Porth Transport Hub continue to grow.
