A devastating diagnosis has rocked a mum-of-three’s world, urging her to share her story and encourage others to be proactive about their health. Judy Gotham, aged 40, discovered a small lump in her left breast just after Christmas in 2022. What followed was a grade three triple negative breast cancer diagnosis, throwing her life into disarray.
Facing a lumpectomy and subsequent chemotherapy treatments, Judy endured x4 cycles of Docetaxel and Cyclophosphamide. Complications arose after her first cycle, leading to hospitalisation due to neuropathy sepsis. Further tests revealed she carries the BRCA2 gene, prompting plans for a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery to battle the aggressive cancer.
Throughout her challenging journey, Judy found solace in sharing her experiences on Instagram, documenting her struggles with hospitals, hair loss, infections, and overcoming her fears of needles and sickness. Her eldest son, William, showed incredible support by shaving his head and raising funds for breast cancer research.
As a working mother with two jobs, Judy also received immense support from her boyfriend, family, and friends. Her local pole studio organized a charity event to send Judy and her children on a holiday. Additionally, she benefitted from the ‘someone like me’ buddy system by Breast Cancer Now, which pairs patients with volunteers for emotional support.
Inspired by the help she received, Judy now volunteers to aid others facing breast cancer, offering a listening ear to those in need. She continues to share her journey on Instagram and is set to conduct a charity raffle to support The Primrose Foundation in Plymouth.
Judy’s story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, demonstrating the power of community and positivity in the face of adversity. Her proactive approach to battling cancer and her commitment to supporting others showcases the strength and compassion that can emerge from even the darkest of situations.
