Series of closures on M4 Prince of Wales bridge set to bring disruption for motorists

A series of closures on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge is set to cause disruption for motorists travelling between Wales and England. National Highways has announced that the bridge will be closed overnight for several days starting from Monday, October 21, until Thursday, October 24. Traffic Wales has confirmed that diversions will be in place to assist drivers during the closures.

The closures schedule is as follows: From Monday to Wednesday, the westbound carriageway of the Prince of Wales Bridge will be closed from 9 pm to 6 am. On Thursday, both eastbound and westbound lanes will be closed overnight between 9 pm and 6 am. During these times, traffic will be diverted via the M48 Severn Bridge.

National Highways stated that the closures are necessary for resurfacing and repair works on the bridge that are scheduled to continue until the end of autumn 2024. Safety is cited as the primary concern, especially during windy conditions which can create hazards for drivers crossing the Severn Estuary. The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge is designed with barriers to mitigate the effects of strong winds, unlike the older M48 Severn Bridge.

Drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to accommodate for the closures and diversions. For the latest updates on Welsh news and traffic information, sign up for the newsletter from Welsh Online. Stay informed and stay safe while travelling on the roads.
