Italian dancer Giovanni Pernice is set to make an appearance in the upcoming ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ anniversary special. Giovanni, who left the show ahead of the current series due to conduct investigations following complaints from former dance partner Amanda Abbington, is expected to feature in the one-off programme. The special event will celebrate the show’s history by showcasing iconic performances and familiar faces from the past and present.
The anniversary special is anticipated to include highlights from Giovanni’s 2021 winning year with Rose Ayling-Ellis, the programme’s first deaf contestant. A source revealed to The Sun on Sunday that footage from their emotional silent performance is likely to be featured. While the BBC has not confirmed whether Giovanni will appear in person for the show, there is speculation that he may be part of the celebration through archive footage.
On the other hand, fellow professional dancer Graziano Di Prima is unlikely to participate in the anniversary special after being dismissed in July following allegations of misconduct with his celebrity partner Zara McDermott. The BBC stated that editorial decisions on the show’s final content have yet to be finalised.
Despite six of the 17 complaints made against Giovanni being upheld, the 34-year-old dancer apologised to Amanda Abbington after a review found merit in some of her grievances. In response, Amanda hinted at potential further legal action in her interview with Newsnight, expressing that unresolved issues remained from the investigative report.
Giovanni, who continues to appear on the Italian version of ‘Strictly’ and is planning his solo tour ‘The Last Dance’ for next year, reportedly anticipates a return to the ‘Strictly’ stage in 2025. Sources close to Giovanni shared that he remains hopeful about rejoining the show and has a dedicated fan base supporting his comeback aspirations. However, the final decision rests with BBC executives.
The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ anniversary special promises to be a remarkable event, celebrating the show’s legacy with unforgettable performances and familiar faces, while also reflecting on the challenges and controversies that have shaped its history.
