Middle East appeal raises more than £11m in two days

A fundraising appeal in the UK for the Middle East has seen an impressive response, raising over £11 million in just two days. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) initiated the appeal, which has garnered support from various quarters including the Prince and Princess of Wales. The funds collected are crucial in aiding millions in Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region who are in urgent need of essentials such as food, shelter, and medical assistance after being displaced from their homes due to conflicts.

DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming contributions, highlighting that every donation will have a significant impact on those grappling with immense challenges in the region. With millions of people displaced and facing hunger, the support provided through the DEC will enable coordinated assistance to reach those most in need in Gaza, Lebanon, and surrounding areas. DEC member charities are actively engaged in delivering vital aid including food, water, shelter, and medical supplies where the humanitarian crisis is most severe.

Madara Hettiarachchi from the DEC shed light on the grim situation in Gaza, where agricultural produce has been decimated, resulting in a severe scarcity of fresh food at exorbitant prices. As winter approaches, the need intensifies, underscoring the urgent requirement for additional funding to avert a looming famine. The UK Government has pledged to match public donations up to £10 million, further amplifying the impact of the fundraising efforts.

The generosity and compassion demonstrated through the outpouring of donations reflect a collective commitment to alleviating the suffering of those affected by the conflict in the Middle East. The contributions play a pivotal role in providing much-needed relief to those facing dire circumstances and uncertainty in the region.

This substantial response to the appeal underscores the unity and solidarity exhibited by individuals, corporate partners, and supporters in the UK towards extending a lifeline of support to those in urgent need. The collaborative efforts channelled through the DEC resonate with the spirit of humanitarianism and empathy, reflecting a shared dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of those affected by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
