Tragic Death of Five-Year-Old in House Fire
Five-year-old Alysia Salisbury tragically lost her life in a devastating house fire at her family home in Dolgoed, Pontyglasier, Crymych, Pembrokeshire on May 27, 2023. The incident occurred when a fire broke out in her sister’s bedroom on the first floor of the property. Alysia, who was having a sleepover in her sister’s bed, was unable to escape the flames that quickly engulfed the room.
The inquest, held at Haverfordwest County Hall, revealed the sequence of events that led to the tragic incident. Alysia’s mother, Tara Salisbury, her partner Joshua Hale, and her eldest sister were also present in the house at the time. Smoke alarms alerted the family to the fire, initially believed to have originated from the oven. However, upon investigating, Alysia’s eldest sister discovered smoke coming from under the door of the bedroom where Alysia was located.
Mr. Hale instructed the other children to evacuate the house with the dogs for safety, unaware that Alysia was still inside the burning room. Despite their best efforts, the fire spread rapidly, making it impossible for the family to rescue Alysia. The fire service arrived at the scene and made extensive attempts to save her, but tragically, she was found lifeless in the bedroom and pronounced dead at 1.05am on May 28.
Alysia, described as a “happiest little girl,” had autism, which meant she had a fascination with sensory experiences, including fire. The inquest revealed concerns about her interaction with fire-related items, and precautions were taken to restrict access to matches and lighters in the house. The cause of the fire was suspected to be a naked flame coming into contact with flammable material, possibly ignited by a lighter or scented candles.
During the coroner’s hearing, Alysia’s mother expressed the family’s profound grief and the unbearable loss they were experiencing. The coroner, Paul Bennett, concluded that Alysia’s death was accidental, resulting from an unintended consequence of a deliberate act. He acknowledged the unimaginable horror and helplessness Tara and Joshua faced during the tragic event.
Alysia’s funeral was held at Narberth Crematorium, where family and friends gathered to pay their final respects. The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the bright and joyful spirit Alysia brought into the lives of those around her. Her memory will forever be cherished by her loved ones, as they navigate life without her presence.
The incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences of fire accidents and the importance of fire safety measures in households, especially when children are present. The Salisbury family’s unimaginable loss has left a deep void in their lives, as they come to terms with the tragic passing of their beloved daughter.
