A 15-year-old girl from Bonkle, North Lanarkshire, Niamh Connell, initially believed to have been experiencing an allergic reaction, was later diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. In June, Niamh developed a persistent and distressing itch across her entire body. Despite efforts to identify triggers and alleviate her symptoms, the itch worsened, leading to severe skin damage from scratching. Following the discovery of a lump on her neck, urgent medical attention was sought, resulting in a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in August. The news was particularly difficult for the Connell family, who had recently experienced the loss of Niamh’s aunt, Mhaired, to mental health and alcohol issues.
Deborah and Brian Connell, Niamh’s grandparent-guardians, set up a GoFundMe page and participated in a ‘Brave the Shave’ fundraiser to support Niamh’s treatment and honour Mhaired’s memory. Niamh’s appearance changes due to chemotherapy have been challenging for her, impacting her self-esteem and social life. Despite the emotional toll of the diagnosis and recent family loss, Niamh has shown resilience throughout her treatment, undergoing two cycles of chemotherapy.
An advocate for listening to one’s body, Niamh shared the importance of trusting one’s instincts and seeking medical attention when needed. The Connell family remains hopeful and determined to help Niamh return to a happy and healthy life. With overwhelming community support through their fundraising efforts, the family expresses gratitude for the outpouring of generosity.
Deborah and Brian’s commitment to supporting Niamh and their family showcases their dedication and love as legal guardians. Through their fundraising endeavours and Niamh’s strength, they aim to navigate the challenges presented by her diagnosis and treatment.
