Welsh dancer Amy Dowden has shared a new outlook on life following her return to Strictly Come Dancing after battling breast cancer. The 34-year-old dancer from Caerphilly was unable to compete on the show last year as she underwent treatment for the illness. Amy underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy, and in February this year, she announced that she has “no evidence of disease” following tests.
Amy has been open about her cancer journey, inspiring millions with her bravery and resilience. She made a triumphant return to Strictly last month as the dance partner to JLS star JB Gill. While appearing on BBC’s The One Show, Amy reflected on her experience and shared a heartfelt message about life after cancer. She expressed feeling inspired by a teenager named Grace, who discussed her own cancer diagnosis, saying, “there is a life after cancer,” and revealed her new motto as “Go grab life.”
During the first live show of the 2024 series, Amy and JB impressed the judges with their waltz, earning them a top score. Amy mentioned some challenges they faced due to JB’s background in choreography with his former band JLS which differs from ballroom and Latin dancing. Despite the adjustments, Amy sees great potential in JB and is enjoying the experience.
Despite her return to the dancefloor, Amy has not forgotten the healthcare professionals who supported her during her cancer treatment. She invited her oncology nurses to watch her perform live in the studio, acknowledging the crucial role they played in her recovery. Amy expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s because of them and the amazing work that they do that I’ve been able to get back to doing what I love.”
Amy Dowden’s story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the importance of cherishing every moment. Her journey from battling cancer to returning to the spotlight on Strictly Come Dancing is an inspiration to many, showing that life’s challenges can be overcome with strength and positivity. As Amy continues to shine on the dance floor, her story resonates with audiences, encouraging everyone to embrace life fully and with gratitude.
