Transport for Wales passengers soar as cancellations drop since last year

Transport for Wales (TfW) has experienced a significant increase in passenger numbers compared to last year, coupled with a decrease in cancellations. New official data reveals that TfW accommodated 1.6 million more passengers between April and June this year compared to the same period in 2023.

The surge in passenger numbers can be attributed to various factors, including the introduction of larger trains and popular events held at the Principality Stadium. Passenger figures rose to 7.6 million during this quarter, marking a 27% increase on TfW’s Wales and Borders network. This growth surpassed other UK train operators, with the TransPenine Express seeing an 18% increase and the Elizabeth Line in London experiencing a 16% rise.

While some UK operators faced a decline in passengers, TfW’s success highlights a positive trend in the industry. The completion of the £1bn electrification of the Core Valley lines into Cardiff is expected to further boost passenger numbers due to enhanced service frequency and the introduction of larger trains and tram-trains.

Despite the ongoing reliance on public subsidies provided by the Welsh Government, TfW has managed to surpass pre-pandemic passenger revenues, thanks to longer average passenger journeys and ticket price adjustments. Improved punctuality and reliability, with an 8.1% increase and 3.2% decrease in cancellations respectively, have also contributed to TfW’s positive performance.

Major events in Cardiff, such as concerts by Bruce Springsteen, Pink, Foo Fighters, and Taylor Swift at the Principality Stadium, have played a significant role in attracting passengers. Additionally, specific routes like Chester to Manchester/Liverpool, Cardiff to Merthyr, and Cardiff to Swansea have seen notable increases in passenger numbers.

Commenting on the encouraging passenger growth, James Price, the chief executive of TfW, highlighted the collective effort in delivering a reliable service across various communities. The introduction of new trimodes trains, capable of operating in battery, diesel, and electric modes, is set to enhance service quality on multiple lines.

As TfW continues to make strides in improving its services, the strong passenger growth figures signal a promising trajectory for the Welsh transport network. With ongoing investments and commitment to upgrading the fleet, TfW aims to provide an efficient and reliable transportation experience for the residents of Wales and beyond.
