The Welsh surf school that’s changing lives

A surf school in Wales is making waves with its life-changing impact on the community. Ben Clifford, the founder of Surfability UK, was honoured with the TSB Community Partner Pride of Britain Award in 2019 for his outstanding work. Surfability UK is Wales’ first adaptive and inclusive surf school, located in Caswell Bay on the Gower. The school is dedicated to ensuring that individuals with additional needs can enjoy the waters through adapted surfing lessons using specialized equipment and coaching.

Ben Clifford expressed his gratitude for winning the award, describing it as an “amazing experience”. He shared his experience of attending the awards ceremony in London, where he and his team swapped their wetsuits for smart suits. The recognition from Pride of Britain has not only boosted Surfability’s visibility but also enabled them to reach more people who may have never considered surfing as a possibility before.

Reflecting on the impact of the award, Ben noted that Surfability has become busier, allowing them to help more individuals discover the joy of surfing. He emphasised the importance of continued support for community organisations and charities, highlighting the significance of initiatives like the Pride of Britain Fund in providing extra resources to carry out their work effectively.

The Pride of Britain Fund, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is offering £100,000 in grants to local heroes and charities across the UK. Grants ranging from £500 to £2,500 are available for individuals or groups making a positive difference in their communities. To apply for funding or nominate someone deserving, interested parties can fill out an online form. The final decision on grant recipients will be determined by local communities, ensuring that the funding goes towards those who need it most.

Surfability UK’s recognition and success stand as a testament to the transformative power of community initiatives. By providing inclusive surfing opportunities, the surf school is breaking barriers and inspiring individuals of all abilities to embrace the thrill of riding the waves. Ben Clifford’s dedication to making surfing accessible to everyone showcases the profound impact that local heroes can have on their communities. The Pride of Britain Fund continues to champion and support these individuals, reinforcing the importance of community-driven efforts in creating a more inclusive and empowering society.
