Cardiff shop and café has window kicked in and cash and stock stolen

A popular LGBTQ+ shop and café in Cardiff fell victim to a burglary in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The Queer Emporium, situated in the Royal Arcade, had its window kicked in, allowing an intruder to enter the premises and make off with cash and stock. Yan White, the founder of The Queer Emporium, discovered the break-in when he arrived for work on Tuesday morning. The burglar had managed to squeeze through the damaged window, taking spirits, tablets used for the till system, and the cash float. The total cost of the damage and stolen items, along with the closure of the business on Tuesday, is estimated to set the business back around £1,000.

After police investigations and repairs, The Queer Emporium was able to open its doors to customers again on Wednesday, albeit later than usual. This is not the first time the establishment has been targeted, as a similar incident occurred last Christmas when the shop’s window was smashed just before opening on Christmas Day.

Yan White expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community after sharing the news of the break-in on social media. He highlighted the importance of creating a supportive community through The Queer Emporium and mentioned that the support received has been heartening. The team at The Queer Emporium was comforted by the pledges of regular customers to visit and show their support in the days following the incident.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police confirmed that an investigation is underway regarding the burglary at the Royal Arcade. They urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the case, quoting reference number 2400343370. Burglaries can be a traumatising experience for individuals and businesses alike, emphasising the need for vigilance and community support during such incidents.

Despite the setback caused by the break-in, The Queer Emporium remains resolute in its mission to create a safe and welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community in Cardiff. The resilience shown by Yan White and the team reflects their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity within the community.
