Welsh Water admits sewage discharge permit breaches

Welsh Water, known as Dwr Cymru, has acknowledged breaching sewage discharge permit regulations. The company has pleaded guilty to 15 violations and requested that additional offenses be considered. These admissions were made during a hearing at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court, where Dwr Cymru’s barrister, Richard Kimblin KC, stated that a basis of plea would be provided before sentencing. The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.

The prosecution was led by Natural Resources Wales and focused on Dwr Cymru’s legal obligations to conduct self-monitoring of effluent discharges from sewage and water treatment facilities across multiple locations in Wales and Herefordshire. The company was required to report these findings to the environmental regulator. A sentencing date for Dwr Cymru has been set for December 17.
