Two M4 crashes caused delays of 30 minutes as rush hour queues stretch miles – Wales Online

There were long delays on the M4 around Newport after two rush hour crashes this morning, causing miles of tailbacks on both the east and westbound carriageways near junction 24.

The first crash occurred eastbound between J24 A449 (Coldra) and J23A A4810 (Magor Services) at around 7:30 am. Although all lanes reopened quickly, there were significant delays in the area, with queues of around 30 minutes reported. As traffic was slowly clearing from this incident, a second crash happened at around 8:15 am on the westbound carriageway. One lane was blocked from J24 A449 (Coldra) to J25 B4596 Caerleon Road (Caerleon), resulting in a travel time of 20 minutes. Poor driving conditions exacerbated the situation due to a yellow weather warning in place.

Traffic Wales issued warnings about congestion and poor driving conditions in both directions around junction 24 following incidents on both carriageways. Updates on the congestion were provided as the situation evolved, with all lanes eventually reopening but heavy congestion remaining in both directions.

The heavy congestion in the area led to traffic almost coming to a standstill, but the road was expected to clear shortly as all lanes were open. Long delays persisted in the area as congestion gradually dissipated from the earlier lane closures.

In related news, Traffic Wales documented the incident alongside other recent developments on travel and traffic situations across Wales, including chaotic scenes on a packed Welsh train and tragic motorway crashes resulting in fatalities and injuries.

As travel conditions improved and traffic gradually eased, warnings about heavy rain leading to potential travel disruption and flooding were issued. The updates encompassed various aspects of traffic, travel, and weather conditions affecting commuters in Wales.

The reporting highlighted challenges faced on the roadways, emphasising the need for caution and awareness, especially during adverse weather conditions and congested periods. The incidents underscored the importance of road safety and preparedness for unexpected delays during peak travel times.
