Conservative leadership hopeful Kemi Badenoch calls Senedd expansion ‘abhorrent’ and ‘sheer arrogance’

Conservative leadership contender Kemi Badenoch has labelled the expansion of the Senedd as ‘abhorrent’ and an act of ‘sheer arrogance’. In a scathing critique, Badenoch criticised Welsh Labour for their handling of the region, stating that the recent defeat suffered by the Welsh Conservative MPs should not have occurred given the alleged mismanagement by the Labour Welsh Government.

Badenoch highlighted issues such as lengthy waiting lists, poor educational standards, and high business rates as indicators of Labour’s failure in Wales. She expressed dismay at the decision to allocate over £100 million to create more political positions while essential public services face budget cuts. The move was described as prioritising government expansion over the welfare of the public, revealing what Badenoch called the socialist party’s arrogance.

Despite these challenges, Badenoch outlined her vision for party renewal with a focus on Wales. She underscored the importance of clarity in the party’s identity and direction to regain trust from voters. Referencing the steel industry crisis in Port Talbot, she emphasised the need to act decisively in the country’s best interests, showcasing a successful intervention that saved jobs and secured a future for steelmaking in South Wales.

Looking ahead, Badenoch advocated for a united front within the Conservative party in Wales, emphasising the upcoming Senedd election as a crucial moment for the region. She called for collaboration with Senedd members to challenge Labour and attract voters back to the Conservative fold, positioning the party as the genuine alternative to Labour in Wales.

As Badenoch vies for leadership of the Conservative Party, her “2030 Renewal Plan” aims to rebuild the party step by step, with Wales at its core. By addressing key issues, advocating for decisive action, and fostering unity within the party, Badenoch seeks to usher in a new era for the Welsh Conservatives.
