Welsh council addresses speculation over use of prominent town-centre building

Neath Port Talbot Council has responded to recent speculation regarding the future of the Cross Community Enterprise Centre in Pontardawe, a prominent town-centre building at the heart of the community. The council clarified that while discussions have taken place about finding a new purpose for the building, no final decisions have been made yet.

The building, situated at the junction of Herbert Street and High Street, has served as a community centre and office space for local businesses for many years. Earlier this year, the lease on the building was returned by an independent operator who could no longer sustain it, prompting the council to consider alternative uses for the site.

Despite concerns raised by the public after scaffolding appeared at the building, with speculation suggesting it might be repurposed as emergency accommodation for individuals awaiting trial, a council spokesperson emphasised that no concrete plans have been finalised. Any potential decisions regarding the building’s future would first undergo a public consultation process.

The council explained that the recent scaffolding was erected for urgent roof repairs to safeguard the structure. They also mentioned exploring various options for the building’s future, such as transforming it into a business centre, accommodation, or other community-focused facilities. However, they reiterated that no decisions have been made at this point.

Paul Rees, a local resident, emphasised the significance of the building to the community and expressed the desire for transparency in the decision-making process. He highlighted the need for regular updates from councillors to address any uncertainties and ensure community involvement in shaping the building’s future.

A council report from August had previously estimated that the costs of refurbishing the premises to meet current standards could exceed £500,000. This further underscores the importance of carefully considering all available options and engaging with the public before any final determinations are reached.

The Cross Community Enterprise Centre holds a special place in Pontardawe’s history and landscape, making it essential to weigh all possibilities for its future use thoughtfully. As discussions continue, the council remains committed to keeping the community informed and involved in shaping the building’s destiny.
