Local football players in Wales have been left devastated after a pitch used by hundreds of players was wrecked by yobs on quad bikes. The incident occurred at Cwmbwrla Park, where Plough Colts Football Club and various community members play their matches. The damage caused by quad bikers has resulted in deep track marks across the field, leading Swansea Council to condemn the pitch indefinitely.
The chairman of Plough Colts Football Club, Nicky O’Connor, expressed his dismay over the situation, noting that more than 300 people from the club and the local community will be affected by the loss of the pitch. The damage not only impacts the club’s junior and senior teams but also a mental health team that utilizes the field for training sessions. O’Connor mentioned that the club is now forced to find alternative locations to play their games, with hopes to return to Cwmbwrla Park only after significant repairs have been made.
According to O’Connor, the ease of access for quad bikes to the pitch raises concerns about potential future incidents. As a result, Plough Colts Football Club has launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of £20,000 to install barrier fencing around the football pitches at Cwmbwrla Park. The club acknowledges that it may take months before the pitch is restored, with possibilities of it being out of commission for the entire season.
The community has shown support for the club, with donations pouring in to help secure the pitches and prevent similar acts of vandalism in the future. Plough Colts Football Club is determined to overcome this setback and continue providing a safe and enjoyable environment for football enthusiasts in the area.
