BBC presenter Jay Blades has pleaded not guilty to allegations of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards his wife. The 54-year-old, known for hosting the popular show The Repair Shop, entered his plea at Worcester Crown Court regarding a charge of engaging in such behaviour towards his wife, Lisa-Marie Zbozen, between January 1, 2023, and September 12 of the current year. The couple’s relationship came under public scrutiny when Ms Zbozen declared its end via an Instagram post on May 2.
Appearing before the Recorder of Worcester, Judge James Burbidge KC, Blades, hailing from Claverley in Shropshire, wore a dark suit and tie as he confirmed his identity to the court clerk and submitted his not guilty plea. The charge against him asserts that his actions had a “serious effect” on his partner, causing her to fear violence on at least two occasions. Although an application for a private hearing was rejected by the judge, the case was adjourned with a possible trial date set for May 6 next year.
Furthermore, Judge Burbidge lifted a bail condition that required Blades to wear an electronic tag, citing operational deficiencies by the responsible company. The judge addressed Blades, acknowledging his denial of the allegations and stating, “You are aware of the allegations against you because you have a particularised indictment.” The TV personality, honoured with an MBE in 2021 for his contributions to craft, left the court premises without providing any comments on the matter.
During the brief 12-minute court session, a summarized version of the charges was presented to Blades, who only responded with the plea of not guilty. The detailed allegations were reserved for the forthcoming trial proceedings. The judge emphasized that the jury and the public would hear the specifics of the accusations during the trial, clarifying that all details would be disclosed at that time.
