The highly contagious Victorian skin disease linked to poverty which is soaring in the UK

A significant increase in scabies cases has been reported in the UK, according to NHS data, with a 66% rise so far this year. Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by mites and can lead to complications, including life-threatening conditions. Although generally treatable with creams or lotions, a shortage of the essential drugs permethrin and malathion has been reported due to factors like the war in Ukraine and rising raw material costs.

Medical experts warn that while scabies itself may not be severe, it can exacerbate other conditions like eczema or psoriasis, potentially leading to infections like impetigo. The spread of diseases such as scabies, measles, and whooping cough is being linked to poverty and decreasing vaccination rates. Measles, for instance, can result in serious complications if it spreads to the lungs or brain, with hospital visits for measles in England seeing a five-fold increase to 2,305 visits last year.

Gwen Nightingale from the Health Foundation highlights the impact of poverty on health, citing factors like inadequate housing and poor nutrition. She urges the government to address these issues to prevent the spread of such conditions. The UK Health Service Authority has issued a warning about the rise in measles hospitalisations, emphasizing the importance of vaccination in preventing diseases like measles and whooping cough.

NHS national director for vaccination and screening, Steve Russell, stresses the significance of vaccination in protecting children from preventable diseases. He urges parents to ensure their children’s vaccinations are up to date. For individuals dealing with scabies, pharmacists recommend using a cream or lotion, following instructions carefully, and seeking medical advice if necessary. It’s crucial for all household members to undergo treatment simultaneously to prevent re-infestation.

As the healthcare system grapples with an increase in scabies cases and other infectious diseases, addressing underlying issues like poverty and vaccination rates becomes crucial in curbing the spread of these conditions. It is essential for individuals to stay informed about preventive measures and to seek medical attention promptly for proper treatment.
