‘Our son was just 48-hours old when doctors said they were running out of options’

A couple from Swansea faced an unimaginable ordeal when their son, Theo, was born and immediately struggled to breathe, requiring urgent medical intervention. Baby Theo was born footling breech, necessitating an elective c-section for his safe delivery. Soon after birth, he was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit due to breathing difficulties. Doctors diagnosed severe conditions including PPHN, respiratory distress syndrome, and sepsis, leaving Theo’s parents, Lauren and Alex, fearing for their son’s life.

The situation became critical as doctors informed the couple that they were running out of options and there was a risk to Theo’s life. Facing the possibility of the worst outcome, Lauren and Alex decided to name their son ‘Theo’, signifying “Gift from God” and “brave” in Greek. Theo was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for ECMO treatment before returning to Singleton Hospital in Swansea. After 21 days in the hospital, Theo was finally discharged home on July 12, much to his parents’ relief.

Alex expressed his gratitude towards the healthcare staff at Singleton Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for their exceptional care and support throughout Theo’s journey. He commended the consultants, doctors, nurses, midwives, and auxiliary staff for their dedication and expertise in saving Theo’s life. In recognition of the hospitals’ efforts, Alex pledged to undertake a sponsored walk between the two hospitals to raise funds and honour the staff who played a crucial role in Theo’s recovery.

Despite the challenges they faced, Lauren and Alex highlighted the outstanding care and compassion they received at both hospitals and hoped their story would provide reassurance to future parents considering healthcare options. They emphasised the importance of sharing their positive experience amidst recent negativity surrounding the hospitals, aiming to inspire confidence in the healthcare services provided. The Kiley family’s journey serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to save lives and provide exceptional care to patients in need.
