Brits are trying out ‘Bum sunbathing’ and ‘wellness vaping’ thanks to social media

Brits are embracing some unconventional wellness fads, with trends like ‘bum sunbathing’ and ‘wellness vaping’ gaining popularity thanks to social media. A recent survey of 2,000 active adults has shed light on the most bizarre fitness trends of 2024, including practices like yoga with animals and ear candling. Gen Z appears to be the most eager to experiment with these peculiar trends, with 38 per cent admitting to trying out new fads this year, compared to 16 per cent of Millennials and 2 per cent of Gen X.

On average, individuals have tested at least three different wellness trends in their lifetime, driven by a desire to improve wellbeing, dissatisfaction with current routines, or influence from celebrities and influencers. Online personality and wellness advocate, Chessie King, emphasised the importance of distinguishing between fleeting fads and sustainable health practices, noting the pitfalls of being swayed by online trends.

When it comes to prioritising wellbeing, the survey found that 31 per cent struggle with maintaining a healthy diet, while 19 per cent find it challenging to engage in regular exercise. The main motivations for exercising were health and wellbeing, with a focus on improving mental health. Socialising with friends and being incentivised by rewards were also cited as factors that influence people’s fitness routines.

Amid the proliferation of fitness content on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, over four fitness-related posts inundate adults daily, leading to feelings of confusion and uncertainty among 48 per cent of respondents seeking reliable information. Donna Collins, Virgin Active’s head of product, expressed the need for accessible and trustworthy wellness advice amidst the noise of transient fads promising unrealistic health benefits.

In a world where wellness trends constantly evolve, it is crucial for individuals to discern between passing fads and sustainable practices that contribute to long-term health and wellbeing. With the influence of social media shaping our perceptions of fitness, it becomes imperative to navigate through the plethora of trends and advice to find what truly works for each individual.
