Mattel Introduces Special Barbie for Diwali
In a first for the toy manufacturing industry, Mattel has unveiled a new Barbie doll to celebrate one of the biggest Indian festivals of the year, Diwali. The Barbie Signature Diwali doll aims to embody the essence of the contemporary Indian woman, just in time for the Hindu festival of lights. Designed by renowned Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre, the doll showcases a traditional Indian ensemble that pays tribute to both Anita’s heritage and the skilled rural women artisans who preserve Indian traditions.
The Barbie Signature Diwali doll features the Moonlight Bloom set, a modern interpretation of the classic lehenga, complemented by a Rajasthan-inspired koti vest adorned with nature-inspired patterns. This release comes ahead of the Diwali celebrations, which typically involve exchanging gifts, enjoying sweets, illuminating homes with lights, and bursting firecrackers while donning traditional attire.
Anita Dongre expressed her delight in creating the Barbie Diwali doll, emphasising its representation of the contemporary Indian woman who embraces her cultural roots with pride. She hopes that this new Barbie will serve as an inspiration for children worldwide to connect with their heritage and traditions.
Diwali is an annual festival that symbolises the triumph of good over evil, marked by joyous festivities that include family gatherings, feasting, and the exchange of gifts. The release of the Diwali Barbie adds a touch of cultural significance to the iconic doll collection, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Indian heritage and fashion.
By launching the Barbie Signature Diwali doll, Mattel not only honours the spirit of Diwali but also showcases the diversity and beauty of Indian culture to a global audience. This collaboration between Mattel and Anita Dongre underscores the importance of cultural representation and inclusivity in the world of toys and fashion, inspiring children to embrace their cultural identity with pride and confidence.
