A tragic incident unfolded when a pregnant woman, Nicola Harvey, aged 35, was discovered unresponsive on a canal towpath at 37 weeks into her pregnancy. Nicola was rushed to the Royal Stoke University Hospital on 13th June, 2023, after reportedly taking monkey dust, a synthetic psychoactive substance also known as MDPV. Due to a brain bleed caused by the drug, Nicola was placed in a medically induced coma. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save her, Nicola’s condition deteriorated, leading to the heartbreaking decision to turn off life support. She passed away on 20th June, 2023.
During the recent inquest, North Staffordshire area coroner Emma Serrano confirmed that Nicola’s death was drug-related, specifically linked to her use of monkey dust which triggered a hemorrhagic stroke. Monkey dust is a stimulant drug often found in crystal or powder form, with effects comparable to amphetamines or cocaine.
The coroner stated, “In relation to how she passed away, the evidence explains how she used monkey dust which caused a hemorrhagic stroke, causing fits and causing pressure, and she was unable to recover from that and passed away. Nicola passed away as a result of using monkey dust and her death will be recorded as in relation to drugs.”
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with substance abuse, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support for those struggling with addiction. Nicola’s passing has brought immense grief to her loved ones and the community, emphasising the importance of addressing drug-related issues promptly and effectively.
As the investigation into Nicola’s death concludes, authorities are urging individuals to seek help and guidance if they or someone they know is facing substance abuse challenges. It is a solemn call to action to prioritise mental and physical wellbeing to prevent further losses due to drug-related incidents.
