Demolition of Bridgend car park to make way for £80m college finally set to go ahead

Plans for the demolition of the former Brackla One multi-storey car park at Cheapside in Bridgend are set to proceed this month to make way for the development of a new multi-million pound college in the town centre. The demolition had been deemed “complex” earlier due to its close proximity to the main railway line and neighbouring supermarket chains Aldi and Asda. However, the demolition is now scheduled for the end of October 2024, with certain road closures expected as a consequence of the work.

This project forms part of a larger scheme to rejuvenate Bridgend town centre over the coming decade, with a prime section of the site reserved for the new £80m Bridgend College. The campus, slated for completion by 2026, will span two buildings and offer top-notch teaching and learning facilities for the area. Additionally, it will feature a 250-seat theatre, IT suites, hair and beauty salons, as well as recording and dance studios.

A spokesperson from Bridgend Council stated that alterations to some roads in the area will be necessary to ensure access to local businesses during the demolition process. They highlighted that certain roads will be modified to facilitate visitors reaching establishments such as Aldi and those at Brackla Shopping Centre. These changes include road closures in front of the car park, but access to Aldi from Brackla Street will remain unaffected. The official also mentioned that adjustments will be made to the bus stops at Cheapside.

Councillor Neelo Farr expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming phase of the town centre campus plans, emphasising the economic benefits the new location will bring to Bridgend. With the campus conveniently situated near Pen-y-Bont train station and the bus station, there are significant opportunities to promote active travel and public transport usage, aiding in achieving net-zero carbon objectives. The council urges the public to plan their journeys accordingly to minimize disruptions during the roadworks.
