‘We were having screaming, shouting, bottles thrown at 3am,’ but now this Cardiff park has been transformed

A Cardiff park, once plagued by syringes and antisocial behaviour, has undergone a remarkable transformation, much to the delight of the local community. Clare Gardens in Riverside, Cardiff, saw its official reopening after extensive renovations that turned it into a welcoming space for residents. School children, locals, and councillors gathered on Friday, October 4, to witness the unveiling of the revamped park.

In the past, Clare Gardens was a scene of chaos, with residents like Janzib Alyas recalling instances of screaming, shouting, and late-night disturbances. The park, previously frequented by alcoholics and drug users, was deemed unsafe for families due to discarded syringes littering the area. However, following the renovation work, which included the addition of a community garden, benches, exercise equipment, and more, the park has received glowing reviews from the community.

Visitors to the park, like Rekha Kaur, expressed admiration for the improvements, labelling them “fantastic.” The rejuvenated Clare Gardens now boasts new picnic tables, resurfaced paths, tree planting, and a meadow area, creating a serene environment for families to enjoy.

The £200,000 renovation project, part of Cardiff Council’s Neigbourhood Renewal Scheme, aims to enhance community spaces across the city. Beyond Clare Gardens, Despenser Gardens has also seen enhancements, including a new piece of artwork to replace a deteriorating mosaic.

Residents, like Rosemary Chaloner, appreciate the efforts taken to revitalise Clare Gardens, despite the temporary disruptions caused by the construction work. Councillors emphasised the importance of maintaining the park’s upkeep, ensuring it remains an asset for the neighbourhood.

Councillors Cllr Lee Bridgeman and Cllr Leonora Thomson commended the park’s transformation and hinted at more improvements coming to Riverside in the future. They stressed the significance of inclusive and safe public spaces for families within the community.

The successful renovation of Clare Gardens serves as a testament to the positive impact of revitalising green spaces on community well-being. The completion of the park project not only reflects the dedication of local authorities but also highlights the community’s eagerness to invest in and nurture their shared spaces for future generations to enjoy.
