‘I didn’t know if my husband would get to meet our daughter when he fell ill weeks after our wedding’

A heart-wrenching ordeal for a young couple took an unexpected turn when Rhys Edwards fell critically ill just weeks after their wedding. Georgia and Rhys Edwards found themselves facing a challenging situation after Rhys was hospitalised with heart failure following their wedding celebrations. Georgia will be running the Cardiff Half Marathon this weekend, raising funds for the charity that supported her family during this difficult time.

Rhys, only 32 years old, had traveled to New York for work and soon found himself admitted to a hospital after developing symptoms such as a rash, leg pain, and an alarmingly low heart rate. Doctors eventually diagnosed him with coxsackievirus, a rare illness in adults that had been unknowingly passed on by their young son. Rhys’ condition required a pacemaker to be attached to his heart, saving his life and allowing him to witness his family grow.

Over a span of 17 days in hospital, including 10 days in the ICU, Rhys fought for his life with Georgia by his side. The couple, who were expecting their second child at the time, faced the uncertainty of whether Rhys would ever meet their unborn daughter. The journey was emotionally taxing for the family, but the support from the medical team and the British Heart Foundation helped them navigate through this challenging time.

After relocating back to Penarth from Dublin, where they had lived for eight years, the family found solace in being closer to their relatives. Rhys, now in the final stages of recovery, continues to deal with residual symptoms while Georgia reflects on the lasting impact of the ordeal on their outlook towards life. The couple’s experience has made them more mindful and grateful for each day, appreciating the precious moments with their loved ones.

Despite the lingering effects of the past trauma, Georgia is determined to challenge herself by participating in the Cardiff Half Marathon. Her fundraising efforts for the British Heart Foundation have been a source of motivation, allowing her to give back to the charity that provided invaluable support during their darkest hours. As Rhys cheers her on from the sidelines as a volunteer, Georgia’s resilience and determination shine through as a testament to their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
