A major railway line in Cardiff is set to close for almost three weeks starting tomorrow, as reported by Wales Online. The Coryton line will be out of service from Monday, October 7, to Sunday, October 20, affecting stops at Coryton, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Ty Glas, and Heath Low Level. This closure is necessary for Transport for Wales to conduct electrification work on the line.
The electrification work is part of preparations for introducing new trains on the Coryton line in spring 2025, with the line scheduled to be electrified from November 2024. By implementing a full closure during this period, maintenance teams can work during the day to minimize disruptions to residents living near the railway.
During the closure, Cardiff Bus will accept tickets between the city centre and Coryton. Additional closures are also planned at the end of October into early November 2024. Passengers are advised to check the full schedule of closures online before making travel plans.
Penarth services will be impacted as well since Coryton services usually continue onwards to Penarth. From Wednesday, October 9 to Sunday, October 20, Penarth services will run at reduced frequency with two services per hour at half-hour intervals between Penarth, Cardiff, and Caerphilly.
A rail replacement service will be in operation during peak morning and afternoon hours from Wednesday, October 9, to Friday, October 11, and then from Monday, October 14 to Friday, October 18. Coryton to Penarth services will not be operational during this period, and there will be no trains running between Cardiff and Penarth on Monday, October 7, and Tuesday, October 8.
Passengers are advised to stay informed about the closures and alternative arrangements in place. This closure marks a significant inconvenience for commuters using these rail services, with alternative transport options available during this period of rail maintenance and upgrades.
