The court heard that Torkington became jealous after his partner talked to a doorman during a night out, leading to a violent assault where he punched, strangled, stamped, and whipped her with a metal object. Torkington claimed he was acting in self-defence, but the judge dismissed his defence as “almost laughable”. The judge highlighted Torkington’s paranoid jealousy and immaturity, sentencing him to two years and nine months in prison for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and strangulation.
