Judge asks if ‘coward and bully’ has shown his partner the horrific injuries he caused his ex

A judge has condemned Oliver Torkington as a “coward and a bully” for the brutal attack he unleashed on his ex-girlfriend, leaving her with horrific injuries. The court heard that Torkington became jealous after his partner talked to a doorman during a night out, leading to a violent assault where he punched, strangled, stamped, and whipped her with a metal object. Torkington claimed he was acting in self-defence, but the judge dismissed his defence as “almost laughable”. The judge highlighted Torkington’s paranoid jealousy and immaturity, sentencing him to two years and nine months in prison for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and strangulation.

During the trial, it was revealed that the assault took place in Torkington’s flat in St Clears, with the victim sustaining a broken finger and ongoing ear issues from the attack. The court also heard that Torkington had a history of violent offences, including multiple assaults and attacks in pub-related incidents. Torkington’s barrister cited his struggles with substance abuse and mentioned his efforts to address his issues, including sobriety and mindfulness classes. However, the judge expressed disbelief in Torkington’s self-defence claims and branded him a coward for not admitting to his actions.

The judge questioned whether Torkington’s new partner had seen the extent of the injuries he inflicted on his ex-girlfriend, raising concerns about his pattern of abusive behaviour. Torkington was also issued a five-year restraining order to prevent any contact with his victim. Despite Torkington’s barrister painting a picture of rehabilitation and remorse, the judge emphasised the severity of the assault and the need for accountability. As Torkington begins his prison sentence, the judge reminded him of the impact his actions had on his victim and urged him to reflect on his behaviour.
