Man known as ‘Nicky Chicken’ strangled partner to point she couldn’t breathe

A man known as “Nicky Chicken” has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for a series of assaults on his partner, including strangulation, theft, property damage, and making threats. Nicholas Lewis, who has 99 previous offences on record, also has a conviction for assaulting a previous partner with a spade that left the victim needing stitches. The court heard that Lewis subjected his partner to a series of assaults in June this year, involving grabbing, pushing, and slapping her across the face. One assault saw him grabbing her throat and squeezing for around seven seconds while shouting that they loved each other.

During another incident, Lewis grabbed a bread knife and threatened his partner’s friends before slapping her across the face. Despite being arrested and released on bail with a no-contact order, Lewis continued to assault the woman, including holding a weapon to her neck and demanding her ring. On July 23, Lewis was seen in a street altercation, where he handed an axe to a woman, leading to his arrest. In court, Lewis pleaded guilty to various charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Lewis has a history of 45 convictions for 99 offences dating back to 1998, including burglaries, assault causing actual bodily harm, and possession of offensive weapons. His defence lawyer attributed his criminal behaviour to a turbulent childhood surrounded by drug-abusing parents. Despite this, Lewis has shown remorse and a willingness to change his life. The judge highlighted Lewis’s pattern of assaults, property damage, and lack of engagement with probation services. Ultimately, Lewis was sentenced to 33 months in prison, with an additional six months from a previously suspended sentence.
