Motability Scheme update for people on PIP, ADP and other disability benefits

The Motability Scheme has recently provided an update for individuals receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment (ADP), and other disability benefits. The scheme, which currently has over 800,000 customers across the UK, offers a practical solution for disabled individuals to access vehicles and equipment to enhance their mobility.

Participants in the scheme, who receive a disability benefit with an award for the higher or enhanced rate of the mobility component, have the option to allocate all or part of their payment towards leasing a new car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, scooter, or powered wheelchair. Eligible beneficiaries include those on PIP, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS), and Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

In addition to providing a new vehicle, customers also benefit from insurance coverage, breakdown assistance, servicing, maintenance, tyre replacements, and windscreen repairs as part of the lease package. The most recent price list, offering over 950 vehicles, has been released on the Motability Scheme website, showcasing a range of options for participants to choose from.

Andrew Miller, CEO of Motability Operations, highlighted the challenges faced by drivers due to increasing costs attributed to rising inflation and energy expenses. As the automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles, manufacturers are urged to meet sales targets, potentially resulting in higher advance payments for vehicles on the Scheme. Despite these changes, the Scheme aims to continue offering value to customers, remaining 45% cheaper on average compared to alternative options.

New claimants or individuals who have been receiving higher rates of qualifying benefits may be eligible for a £750 grant when leasing a vehicle for the first time. This grant can be applied towards the initial payment on a new lease and is a one-time offer per customer. Similarly, for scooters and powered wheelchairs, there is a New Product Payment of £100 available after the delivery of the equipment.

The latest Motability price list includes a variety of vehicles, with more than 45 models requiring no advance payment. Customers can also opt for a variable lease that utilises their entire mobility allowance. The Scheme continually updates its offerings to include electric vehicles, with 209 electric cars listed, including 42 models with Advance Payments under £1,000.

Apart from the vehicle, the comprehensive lease package covers insurance, servicing, RAC breakdown assistance, annual tax, flexibility in driver allocation, Kwik Fit tyre replacements, and many adaptations at no additional cost.
