Brits are taking a trip down memory lane as they reminisce over classic arcade games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders. A new survey has unveiled the top 20 most iconic arcade games of all time. The survey of 2,000 Brits highlighted Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Super Mario Bros as the most beloved arcade games. Other favourites include Tetris, Donkey Kong, and traditional arcade machines like pinball and slot machines.
Despite the nostalgia these games bring, half of the adults surveyed admitted they haven’t played arcade games in years. However, 75 per cent of respondents believe that arcade games are not limited to children, emphasizing the universal appeal of these classics. OLBG, who commissioned the research, noted that old arcade games evoke carefree memories of childhood and embody a simplicity often missing in modern life.
The survey also revealed that nearly half of respondents become overly competitive when playing arcade games, with puzzle games being the most popular genre. Shoot ’em ups like Space Invaders and platforming adventures like Donkey Kong attract 23 per cent and 20 per cent of gamers, respectively. The distinct sounds and flashing lights of arcade machines were cited as the most memorable aspects by respondents.
Most notably, 75 per cent of those polled believe that the primary purpose of visiting an arcade is not to win but to have fun. OLBG highlighted the variety of amusements found in arcades, from classic games for achieving high scores to physical games like air hockey for friendly competition. The survey showcased a deep appreciation for the nostalgia and joy that arcade games bring to players of all ages.
The top 20 arcade games listed by Brits include classics like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Mario Bros, Pinball, Tetris, and Donkey Kong. Street Fighter, Air Hockey, Mortal Kombat, and Asteroids also made the cut. The survey’s findings underscore the enduring popularity and cultural significance of these iconic arcade games, which continue to hold a special place in the hearts of gamers across the UK.
