Met Office says ‘perhaps some snow’ as we brace for tail of hurricane

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for northerly parts of the UK, hinting at the possibility of snow or sleet as the country prepares for the tail end of a hurricane. There were claims from some forecasters suggesting the UK could face a “huge wall of snow” with temperatures plummeting to -10°C. However, the Met Office anticipates a mix of wind, rain, and potentially some snow on Scottish mountain tops, followed by a period of more settled and drier conditions. The upcoming weather is expected to be most severe due to the remnants of Hurricane Kirk making its way across the Atlantic.

Forecasts indicate that colder weather will move south in the coming weeks, with average temperatures prevailing for most of the country. The Met Office’s outlook for October 8 to 17 predicts unsettled conditions, with frequent spells of wind and rain associated with low-pressure systems. Showers may transition to more widespread rain and strong winds, particularly affecting southern areas, later in the week as the remnants of Hurricane Kirk pass through. Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to experience a quicker drop in temperatures, leading to showers and possibly some sleet or snow on Scottish mountains. Following the passing of ex-Kirk, the colder weather is expected to progressively move south.

Towards the end of the forecast period, a more settled period may ensue before another spell of wind and rain, predominantly targeting southern regions. Moving forward, the latter part of October is anticipated to entail low-pressure systems arriving from the Atlantic, resulting in wet and windy conditions, especially in England and Wales. However, Scotland and Northern Ireland could see longer breaks in the inclement weather, potentially experiencing drier spells. The possibility of continued drier conditions later in the month is suggested as higher pressure extends southwards, increasing the likelihood of overnight fog and frost. While temperatures are projected to be near average in the south, below-average temperatures are expected in the north and northwest.

Overall, the Met Office’s long-range weather forecast paints a picture of varying and changeable conditions in the weeks ahead, with the potential for both unsettled and settled periods across different regions of the UK. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and prepare for the mixed conditions expected in the coming days and weeks.
