College tutor ‘groomed’ former student into sending sexual videos

A former teacher who engaged in inappropriate behaviour with a former student has been spared jail time. Ian Powell, aged 60, from Greatgott Road, Bettws, Monmouthshire, initiated contact with the girl while she was studying at the college where he taught. Their communication turned sexual after she left the college. Powell, who had been an educator for 24 years, sent the girl gifts, and she reciprocated by sending sexual images and videos while still underage.

During a sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, prosecutor Ross McQuillan-Johnson stated that Powell’s interactions with the victim went “above and beyond what might be appropriate,” even when the communication was initially platonic. Powell was arrested on December 22, 2023, and later admitted to three counts of making indecent images of children. Two videos and five images were classified as category A, the most severe category, among the illegal content found on his devices.

The victim, in a statement read in court, expressed feeling sick and dread upon learning of Powell’s actions, leading to recurring nightmares and a sense of being followed. Powell’s defence counsel, Nigel Fryer, highlighted his remorse and the absence of prior similar incidents, attributing his actions to personal and work-related stress. Powell was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete rehabilitation, unpaid work, and pay fines.

Judge Shomon Khan emphasised that the victim was in a vulnerable position and that Powell, as the adult, bore full responsibility for his actions. The judge condemned Powell’s behaviour as a breach of trust and imposed a restraining order preventing contact with the victim. Monique McKevitt, senior district crown prosecutor, underlined the impact of Powell’s actions on the victim and stressed the legal consequences of accessing indecent images of children.

The case highlighted the complexities of online grooming and the importance of holding individuals accountable for exploiting young people. The court’s decision aimed to balance punishment, rehabilitation, and protecting the victim’s wellbeing. Powell’s case serves as a reminder of the legal ramifications of such actions and the need for vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
