A 76-year-old monk from an island off the Welsh coast has been arrested on suspicion of harassment and sexual assault. Dyfed-Powys Police received a complaint on September 18 regarding “harassment and non-recent sexual offences”. The arrest of the member of the Caldey Monastic Community on Caldey Island near Tenby in Pembrokeshire occurred on September 20. The police have confirmed that the individual has been released on conditional bail following the arrest.
The police statement outlined, “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report, on September 18, of harassment, and non-recent sexual offences. A 76-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of harassment and sexual assault. He has been released on conditional bail pending further police enquiries. The victim is being supported by specialist officers.”
In response to the incident, the Caldey Monastic Community stated, “We take these matters very seriously and are cooperating fully with Dyfed-Powys police.” They stressed their dedication to the well-being of all involved, adding, “Our priority remains the well-being of those involved, and we are committed to ensuring that appropriate steps are taken in line with our safeguarding responsibilities, and in caring for the most vulnerable.”
