Country park goes underwater before flood defences could be finished

Loggerheads Country Park, situated on the Denbighshire-Flintshire border, has had to close its gates due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The park, near Mold, is experiencing fast-flowing water running through its grounds, leading to the closure of the visitor centre and Caffi Florence. Despite ongoing efforts to enhance flood defences at Loggerheads following significant flooding in 2023, the new defences were not completed in time to avert the latest deluge.

Catherine Metcalfe, head chef at Caffi Florence, described her surprise upon encountering the flooding when she arrived for work. She mentioned that certain areas, including the mill and Oriel Gallery, have been flooded, with water levels continuing to rise. The park is preparing for potential water entering the buildings, with sandbags being readied by the council as a precaution.

Last year, Loggerheads Country Park faced a temporary closure after Storm Babet caused devastating floods. Repair work was promptly carried out, with plans in place to finish flood defence enhancements by mid-October this year. However, due to early autumn rain and the removal of trees facilitating water entry, the park has once again been submerged. The park issued an alert warning of potential flooding in surrounding areas as the River Alyn swells.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has issued flood alerts for various regions, including the River Alyn near Mold and the River Dee in the Vale of Llangollen. Areas like Leadmill, Ponterwyl, Glanyrafon, and Rossett are at risk of flooding. NRW highlighted the possibility of flooding to properties and low-lying lands, urging caution and avoidance of the affected areas.

The frequent flooding at Loggerheads Country Park signifies an escalating challenge, with Catherine noting the repeated inundation of the mill and Oriel Gallery in recent years. As NRW continues to monitor water levels and issue alerts, residents in surrounding areas are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The community’s resilience in the face of such adversity demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding their environment and heritage in the wake of natural disasters.
