Little-known superfood could slash risk of stroke, heart disease and cancer, Tim Spector says

Nutrition expert Professor Tim Spector has highlighted the benefits of including a lesser-known superfood in the diet to improve health. The founder of Zoe Health, Tim Spector, identified tempeh as the superfood that could enhance fibre intake and potentially reduce the risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and various cancers. Tempeh, a plant-based protein similar to tofu but made from whole soybeans, offers a less processed alternative with a nuttier flavour and denser texture. Compared to tofu, tempeh contains higher protein content, equivalent to that of a chicken breast.

In a social media post, Tim Spector recommended incorporating tempeh into meals not only for its protein but also for its fibre content, which is essential for a healthy digestive system. He emphasised the importance of considering a variety of nutrients in food choices, especially fibre, which is often lacking in many diets. Tim highlighted the significance of fibre intake by stating that more than 90% of people in the US and UK fail to meet the recommended daily fibre intake, potentially impacting gut health and increasing the risk of various diseases.

Studies have linked consuming sufficient fibre to a reduced risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, cancer, and overall mortality. Tim Spector referenced a meta-analysis from The British Medical Journal that supported the protective effects of healthy diets rich in fibre against cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and mortality. Alongside tempeh, Tim listed other excellent sources of protein and fibre, including green lentils, kidney beans, black beans, bulgur wheat, and peas.
