Mum-of-two dies from sepsis two days after miscarriage

A young mother of two tragically passed away from sepsis just two days after experiencing a miscarriage. Lorette Divers, aged 30, sought medical attention at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital after miscarrying at 12 weeks. Despite presenting with abdominal pain and a high fever, Lorette was not examined by a doctor, despite a midwife suspecting sepsis and recommending a doctor’s assessment.

After undergoing a procedure to remove foetal tissue, Lorette required resuscitation and emergency surgery, but sadly suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away shortly after admission. The hospital trust acknowledged shortcomings in Lorette’s care, including not suspecting sepsis, failing to administer antibiotics, and not conducting a blood test. This devastating loss has left Lorette’s mother, Maxine, heartbroken, expressing concerns about the hospital’s response to her daughter’s death.

Maxine paid tribute to Lorette, describing her as a wonderful mother who was incredibly proud of her two children. She highlighted the void left by Lorette’s untimely passing and the pain the family continues to endure. A specialist medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, Rosie Charlton, expressed the family’s devastation over the circumstances of Lorette’s death and the need for lessons to be learned to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Maxine and her family hope that by speaking out, they can raise awareness of the human cost of inadequate care and prevent others from experiencing the same pain. They emphasise the importance of early detection and treatment of sepsis as highlighted by Lorette’s tragic case. The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been urged to work with the family to address the concerns and provide closure following Lorette’s passing.

The devastating loss of Lorette Divers serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of sepsis and the critical need for timely medical intervention. The family continues to mourn the loss of a beloved daughter and mother, with hopes that by sharing their story, they can help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
