Asda shoppers can now get food for almost third of normal price

Asda customers across the UK can now benefit from purchasing food at a significantly reduced price as the supermarket chain partners with the food waste platform Too Good To Go. This initiative has been rolled out to 1000 Asda branches, offering customers the opportunity to buy a ‘Surprise Bag’ for just £3.30, which contains products worth £9. The Surprise Bags consist of various grocery items that are close to their use-by date but are still suitable for consumption, aiming to reduce food waste. The contents of the bags are random and can include items like prepared fruit, chilled products, ready meals, bakery items, and produce such as dairy, meat, fish, or poultry nearing their use-by dates.

The partnership with Too Good To Go is not limited to Asda supermarkets but also includes Asda Express stores and foodservice sites within Asda stores like LEON, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway. This collaboration allows more customers to purchase goods at a fraction of their original price and contribute to minimising food waste. Fans of the healthy fast-food restaurant LEON can also take advantage of a new Surprise Bag offer for £3.50, providing them with over £10.50 worth of surplus cakes and pastries that would have otherwise been discarded.

Sam Dickson, Asda Vice President for Commercial Strategy, Operations & Own Brand, expressed delight in expanding the partnership with Too Good To Go, highlighting the importance of reducing food waste. Sophie Trueman, Country Director at Too Good To Go UK and Ireland, emphasised the value of saving food from being wasted, benefiting both businesses and consumers while also promoting environmental sustainability.

Customers can easily access these Surprise Bags by using the Too Good To Go app to locate nearby Asda stores. They can select their preferred collection time and enjoy discounted groceries. While Surprise Bags from Asda Supermarkets are priced at £3.30 with £9 worth of goods, the prices for bags from Asda Express, LEON, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway may vary based on the contents, which could include breakfast items, lunch, dinner food, or cakes and pastries.

This innovative partnership between Asda and Too Good To Go not only offers customers significant savings on food purchases but also contributes to the ongoing efforts to reduce food waste and support sustainable practices in the retail industry.
