The Foreign Office has issued a warning for UK holidaymakers visiting Greece following the tragic deaths of two individuals over the weekend. According to authorities, two people lost their lives in a significant wildfire that swept through forested areas near a seaside resort in southern Greece. The fire, which occurred near Xylokastro in the Peloponnese region, prompted the evacuation of several villages as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, around 350 firefighters supported by eight water-dropping aircraft were able to control the blaze. The outbreak of the fire was exacerbated by strong winds moving through dry forests, a result of a warm spring and hot summer in the region. The two deceased individuals, who are believed to be local residents, were reported missing on Sunday.
In response to this incident, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has highlighted the ongoing risk of wildfires in Greece from April to October, urging travellers to exercise caution. The statement from the Foreign Office emphasises the highly dangerous and unpredictable nature of wildfires and reminds visitors that starting a wildfire, even unintentionally, is considered a criminal offence in Greece. Travellers are advised to immediately contact emergency services by dialling 112 upon spotting a fire, follow updates from @112Greece, adhere to guidance from local emergency services, and seek assistance from their airline or travel operator for return travel to the UK if necessary.
