A 19-year-old student lost his life after slipping on loose rock while descending a 3,000ft Snowdonia peak. Philip Zhu, a beloved martial arts coach, was hiking with his brothers at Tryfan, Capel Curig, Conwy. The tragic incident occurred when Philip convinced his brothers to take a “shortcut,” leading to him losing his balance on loose rock and falling. Despite the efforts of volunteers from the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team, Philip’s injuries were unsurvivable. The inquest into his death, held on September 27, concluded that he died from blunt force head and spinal injuries due to the fall from height.
Philip Zhu was remembered as a passionate martial artist who dedicated his life to coaching both children and professional fighters. Devastated by his sudden passing, the community and his family honoured his memory. His uncle, Philip Cheng, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and described Philip as a special young man who achieved much in his short life. Philip’s dreams of joining the RAF were cut short, but his impact on the martial arts community was profound.
Despite the profound loss, Philip Zhu’s legacy lives on through the martial arts gym where he coached and mentored others. His dedication, infectious smile, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on those who knew him. The void left by his untimely death is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.
As the community mourns the loss of Philip Zhu, his family, friends, and fellow martial artists find solace in the memories and impact he left behind. The martial arts world has lost a bright star, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who were touched by his passion and generosity.
