Hospital worker had been using Snapchat at the wheel – then a man stepped onto the road in front of her

In a tragic incident in Brynhyfryd, Swansea, a hospital worker using Snapchat at the wheel struck a pedestrian, causing life-changing injuries. The victim, a father-of-five, suffered serious brain injuries and is now unable to carry out simple activities like taking his children to the park. The collision occurred on Llangyfelach Road when Ameilia Jeffrey’s Kia hit the pedestrian, Helal Ahmed, as he crossed the road. The court learned that Jeffrey had been using her phone for Snapchat messages nine minutes before the collision.

Regan Walters, the prosecutor, revealed that the collision was witnessed by a police officer who saw Mr. Ahmed being thrown into the air upon impact. The victim was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries to his head, eye sockets, and leg, requiring surgery and ongoing medical attention. Despite the heartbreaking consequences, Jeffrey initially refused to comment during a police interview following the incident.

Mr. Ahmed’s poignant impact statement highlighted the challenges he faces daily due to the injuries sustained in the crash. He expressed his inability to engage in regular activities and worsening eyesight, emphasizing that he harbours no anger but wishes the driver had been more cautious. In sentencing, Judge Catherine Richards handed Jeffrey a 22-month suspended prison term, 200 hours of unpaid work, a driving ban, and a rehabilitation course to raise awareness of the dangers of reckless driving.

Amelia Jeffrey, aged 22, showed remorse through her lawyer’s public apology to Mr. Ahmed. Calling attention to her lack of prior convictions, the court acknowledged the impact of the incident on both the victim and the defendant. Despite Jeffrey’s young age at the time of the collision, the court held her accountable for dangerous driving and imposed strict penalties as a deterrent to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The community stands in solidarity with Mr. Ahmed as he continues to navigate life with his disabilities caused by the unfortunate event.
